The 1st Annual NOSA BIG GAME EVENT was held on January 26th and it was the first time an antler measuring event of this size has been held in Thunder Bay. The event featured moose and deer antler measuring as well as black bear skulls which are also measured and recognized in the record books. Various retail vendors also rented booth space for the event that put them in direct contact with over 300 hunting clientele who passed through the doors of the Slovak Legion that afternoon.

Adrian Hagar of D&R Sporting Goods said, “The day was good for us, we sold a bit of product and we expect some future sales on firearms as a result of the inquiries made by hunters today... overall it was well worth us being here.”

In addition to the retail displays, there was a kids moose calling competition, hunting seminars by Joe Dampier and Gord Ellis as well as numerous prize giveaways.

The kids who entered the moose calling competition each received a $10 gift certificate from D&R Sporting Goods and the top two moose callers received “fun bow kits” courtesy of Tao’s Archery Service.

Listed below are the top two winning entries for each category that saw animals entered for scoring:
Black Bear Archery:
1st Rob Loftus 20 4/16”
2nd John Kaplanis 20 0/16”

Moose Gun:
1st Pat Slivinski 192 3/8”
2nd Bob Reid 191 2/8”
Deer Non Typical Archery:
1st Nick Kaplanis
2nd no other entries

Deer Non Typical Gun:
1st Rudy Kuchta 187 4/8”
2nd James Gilles 185 1/8”
Deer Typical Archery:
1st Joe Dampier 128 7/8”
2nd Nick Kaplanis 127 6/8”

Deer Typical Gun:
1st Glen McGee 161 0/8”
2nd James Gilles 185 1/8”

It should be mentioned that the Kaplanis name appears here on the score board however the Kaplanis boys, in addition to the work they put into organizing this year’s event, declined to accept their cash awards for the categories they won, instead donating the funds back to the organization to put towards next year’s Big Game Event.

What was surprising was that many categories did not receive entry, for instance the archery moose category or any of the crossbow categories, for any species…did not receive entries.
Hopefully in future years, we’ll see more entries and more of them in different categories of firearm type used.

A very special thanks goes to all the hard work and effort put forth by the FROW measuring staff who came from far off to visit Thunder Bay for the event.

Paul and Kevin Beasley of Ontario Monster Whitetails, along with Rene W. Cadene and his wife Deb were also joined by Pope and Young scorer Dave Nuttall and local measurer Joe Dampier as they tackled over 50 animal entries in little more than six hours. A phenomenal feat but one that may have to be exceeded next year as we hope the event grows with popularity among hunters.
