Team NOSA is involved in a variety of organizations and groups covering a wide variety of issues.

FMZ 6 – Fisheries Management Zone 6

Fisheries Management Zone 6 (FMZ 6) lies immediately north and east of Lake Superior (Thunder Bay area), it consists mainly of the old Division 21. Management Zone Maps can be found here: http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/en/Business/LetsFish/2ColumnSubPage/198481.html

The overall objective of Fisheries Management Zone planning is to maintain healthy aquatic ecosystems that provide sustainable benefits, contributing to society’s present and future requirements for a high-quality environment, wholesome food, employment and income, recreational activity and cultural heritage. The committee’s role is to review excisting fishing regulations and make recommendations to the MNR. Recommendations can be changes to possesion limits, fishing seasons, size restrictions etc… Other areas that are looked at include habitat, invasive species, barriers etc.. The Fisheries Management Plan for Zone 6 was implemented in January 2010.

FMZ 9 – Fisheries Management Zone 9

Fisheries Management Zone 9 (FMZ 9) consists of Lake Superior. Management Zone Maps can be found here: http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/en/Business/LetsFish/2ColumnSubPage/198481.html

The overall objective of Fisheries Management Zone planning is to maintain healthy aquatic ecosystems that provide sustainable benefits, contributing to society’s present and future requirements for a high-quality environment, wholesome food, employment and income, recreational activity and cultural heritage. The committee’s role is to review excisting fishing regulations and make recommendations to the MNR. Recommendations can be changes to possesion limits, fishing seasons, size restrictions etc… Other areas that are looked at include habitat, invasive species, barriers etc.. The Fisheries Management Plan for Lake Superior is a work in progress. An area of concern is the dam on the Black Sturgeon River.

LALCC- Lakehead Area Local Citizens Committee

This committee’s role is to make recommendations to the MNR regarding forest management on the Lakehead Forest. The Lakehead Forest is located east and west of Thunder Bay. As an integral part of the planning process, a local citizens committee is required to assist each planning team with the preparation of the forest management plan. The committee represents a range and balance of local interests, and ensures that these interests are communicated to the planning team. The existing management plan runs from 2007-2017 with an annual work schedule which is reviewed yearly. This committee also looks at other activities that are happening within the forest besides tree harvesting.

DRMCAC- Dog River-Matawin Citizens Advisory Committee

This committee’s role is to make recommendations to the MNR regarding forest management on the Dog River-Matawin Forest. The Dog River-Matawin Forest is located west of Thunder Bay. As an integral part of the planning process, a local citizens committee is required to assist each planning team with the preparation of the forest management plan. The committee represents a range and balance of local interests, and ensures that these interests are communicated to the planning team. The existing management plan runs from 2009-2019 with an annual work schedule which is reviewed yearly. This committee also looks at other activities that are happening within the forest besides tree harvesting.

Lakehead Archers Inc.

Lakehead Archers is located just 10 minutes west of Thunder Bay. NOSA director Shane Baker is the Junior Development Director for Lakehead Archers. This position deals with the development of our local young archers as well as getting members trained as coaches and judges. Lakehead Archers also provides archery events and lessons. http://lakeheadarchers.com/

NWRAC- MNR – Northwest Region Director’s Advisory Committee

This committee is made up of various stakeholder representatives who provide policy advise and comment to MNR's Regional Director, on a variety of topics on everything ranging from forest management to wildlife management. The views of these representatives provide a base for MNR management direction.

BGMAC – MNR- Provincial Big Game Management Advisory Committee

The provincial big game management advisory panel is made up of NOSA, OFAH and NOTO representation. These reps oversee MNR management of wildlife WMU's and the tag allocations for Moose, Deer, Bear and most recently, Elk. Representatives provide advice and input on MNR policy related to big game management as well as ensure accountability by MNR with respect to tag allocations across the province.
